On the more objectionable parts of the Attorney General's letter I shall offer no comment, but I think it right to remark that there was no necessity for him to ask to what claim his reference was made, inasmuch as the Claim itself had already formed the subject of question for the Attorney General as to the right to receive Fees for given Professional Advice to a Governmental Department, I may say that I was at first disposed to think this right also inadmissible, for I recollected certain Despatches from the Secretary of State bearing on the subject; viz: Oct. 4 Nr 80 of 14th February 1845, 113 of 27th June 1845, and 149 of 3rd November 1849.
